color interaction-playing with solids

 

Playing with color is one of the most rewarding aspects of quilt making. It can be fun, intuitive, challenging and at times frustrating.  We will explore how colors play off one another, delve into the importance of value, and learn tips for when you get stuck.  Students will start with a variety of quick exercises, and move on to sewing small color studies that can be combined to make a larger quilt.

inspired by the pine burr: the art of folding

 

Students will learn different techniques of fabric folding to create their own unique version of a Pine Burr Quilt.  We will explore the use of various shapes to create different types of layouts and patterns. Students will come away with the knowledge of how to create this time honored style of quilt, which can be applied to everything from quilts to pillows to wall hangings..

This class is available as a 6 hour or 2 day workshop

lone star

Learn how to tackle 8 pointed stars and create your own version of a Lone Star quilt.  In this class we will cover y-seams, sewing bias edges and how to nest angled seams to create precise points.  We will talk about how to scale the design, and go over different types of layouts from traditional to off center grids. Students will start on a mini quilt and learn the basics of construction that can be applied to any size Lone Star.

freezer paper piecing-diamonds quilt

 

Learn how to create freezer paper foundations for precision piecing.  This technique is similar to paper piecing but foundations are reusable and there is no tearing out bits of paper afterwards!  We will use the Diamonds quilt to learn the technique, and we will discuss how to apply it to many other patterns. In this class we will also look at the use of value and color to create visually complex quilts from the repetition of a simple block.

Learn how to incorporate hand quilting to add depth and interest to your quilts.  In this class students will learn the basics of big stitch hand quilting, including using different types of thread, needles and stitching techniques.

This class is available as a 3 hour or a 6 hour workshop

Students will learn how to sew a scrappy double wedding ring block.  In this class we will cover the basics of hand sewing, including creating templates and marking fabric for sewing, as well as color choices and the importance of value for creating a succesful design.   

Level: Beginner

creating complex quilts from simple shapes

 

Learn how to draft simple block patterns and create reusable freezer paper templates for precision piecing.  In this class we will look at the use of value and color to create visually complex quilts from the repetition of a simple block. Come with a basic idea of a block to draft, or choose from a variety of blocks I will present. 

Level: Intermediate

creative bug - hand piecing a double wedding ring block 

 

Join me over on Creative Bug!   I will show how to sew a Double Wedding Ring Block by hand.  We cover the basics of hand sewing, including creating templates and marking fabric for sewing.  Suitable for both novice and more advanced stitchers.

creative bug - big stitch hand quilting

 

Join me over on Creative Bug!   I share my techniques for picking harmonious fabric colors to sew a high-contrast bar quilt, and then I show you how to quilt by hand with a wide array of threads. The final product is a richly layered piece that can be used for a mini-quilt or pillow top – or you can go big and apply this technique to a full-size quilt. The process is playful and inspiring, suitable for both first-time quilters and more advanced stitchers.
